Tourism and Meetings Industry

Dresden is more popular than ever among tourists: with some 1.9 million arrivals and more than 4 million visitor nights, in 2013 the city once again broke the previous year's record. That means growth of 2.3 percent compared with 2011, rates well above the average for Saxony or Germany.

With their share of 18 percent, foreign markets are especially important for tourism in Dresden. The top foreign markets are the USA followed by Switzerland, Austria, Britain, Russian Federation, Netherlands and Japan. Business travelers make up 32 percent of visitor nights. Despite the constantly rising number of beds, their occupancy rate is at the same level. In 2013, 51.2 percent of all 22,521 hotel beds were occupied.

Tourists give Dresden a gross turnover of 987.9 million euros. This goes towards not only the hotel and catering industries but also cultural institutions and the retail business, as well as other service providers such as transport companies.

Conferences and Conventions

In addition to this, Dresden has gained a secure place among the top ten German cities for conferences and conventions. Over the past five years the number of conference and convention attendees rose roughly 50 percent. The city's constant development as an events destination was recognized in 2007 when it won the Conga Award, presented by VERANSTALTUNGSPLANER.DE, the German Association of Events Organizers.

With everything within close reach, Dresden provides a very pleasant conference atmosphere. International hotel chains in every category can be found in central locations. Modern conference hotels and unusual facilities provide space both for small meetings and large conferences with several thousand attendees. Dresden Trade Show, the International Congress Center by the Elbe and Schloss Albrechtsberg castle are just three examples of the wide range available.

The city's unwaning economic dynamism and high concentration of scientific facilities make Dresden the perfect place for knowledge transfer between industry, research and education.
