Fraunhofer Society
Fraunhofer is Europe's largest organization for application-oriented research. Its biggest site is in Dresden, with 11 facilities and institutes.Altogether it employs more than 1,300 staff with an annual turnover of over 130 million euros. After 20 years in the city, the Fraunhofer Society continues to grow. In 2011, ten percent of its investment in extending facilities went to Dresden.
Currently, a new Fraunhofer center is being built on a 1.6 ha site: the Research Center for Resource-Friendly Energy Technologies (RESET).
Applied Research
Dresden's Fraunhofer scientists mainly concentrate on the fields of:
- Micro- and Nanoelectronics,
- New-generation materials,
- Thin Films and
- Photovoltaics
Their results are made available to industry through patents, licenses, training courses and, above all, in the form of contract research projects.
Leading center for the advanced development of OLED technologies
Dresden and the Fraunhofer COMEDD are the center of Europe's leading organic electronics cluster, OES with more than 1,000 employees.
A team of scientists led by Prof. Karl Leo of Fraunhofer COMEDD won the 2011 German Future Prize for their research into organic semi-conductors.
